WINTERVILLE MOUNDS – SITE DIRECTOR

GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPI

STARTING ANNUAL SALARY: $34,493.50 PLUS BENEFITS

DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING APPLICATIONS: June 16, 2006

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History, (MDAH), seeks 
applications for the position of site director of the Winterville 
Mounds, a National Historic Landmark north of Greenville, Mississippi. 
Winterville is a major archaeological mound site with tremendous 
potential as an educational facility. The director is responsible for 
the overall management of the 41-acre property, which includes 
prehistoric ceremonial mounds and a museum. The successful candidate 
reports to the director of the Historic Properties Division and 
supervises a staff of four, including an archaeologist and a historian 
charged with the development of educational programs for school and 
adult groups, and public events. The director must be sensitive to 
Native American issues, including NAGPRA, and serves as the MDAH public 
relations liaison with the Greenville community. Additional 
responsibilities include annual budget preparation and oversight, 
long-range planning, fund-raising, and the preservation of the site’s 
archaeological features. Resume deadline June 16, 2006.

Experience and education requirements: Bachelor’s Degree from an 
accredited four-year college or university in museum studies, historic 
site management, history or a related field and five years related 
experience including one year of supervisory experience. Must have 
strong leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, ability to direct 
and motivate staff, excellent community relations skills, verbal and 
written communication skills.

collecting, preserving, and making available all materials impacting 
upon Mississippi's pre-history, history, up to the current day, and for 
educating interested persons about the archives and collections. There 
are 172 positions within the Department with the Archives and Library 
Division, Historic Preservation Division, Museum Division, Records 
Management Division, and Local Government Records Office located in 
Jackson, Mississippi. The Historic Properties Division has interpreted
