Among the many important and beautiful pieces in the Ancient Greek  
galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art there are scores of  
objects which have been known to come from illegally looted  
archaeological sites, were stolen from museums or are widely regarded  
as fakes. However, to the everyday visitor, these facts are utterly  
hidden. Dr. Senta German will lead a SAFE tour which reveal these  
truths and present the dual injury to archaeological and historical  
research which these circumstances inflict: first, the destruction of  
the site-specific information which archaeological context would have  
provided and second, how, lacking this information, looted objects  
must remain mute. Furthermore, special focus will be given to the  
recent debates about the ownership of cultural heritage as well as  
the MMA’s new agreement with the Italian government.

Senta German, whose fields of specialty are the Greek Bronze and Iron  
Ages, received her PhD from Columbia University. She has over 10  
years of excavation experience in Greece, Israel, the American East  
Coast and Alaska. She recently authored Performance, Power and the  
Art of the Aegean Bronze Age which was published in 2005.

Group admission to the Metropolitan Museum of Art:
$12 (adult) $7 (senior), $6 (student), $2 (NY City student). These  
fees are charged by the museum to all tour attendees, including  
members of the museum and the press. SAFE Tour coordinator will hand  
out admission buttons and collect these fees before the start of the
