Have your teacher pal contact PEM--the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem  
MA. She can also check their library--the Phillips--on line. New  
England saw many, many Asians prior to the Revolutionary war due to  
maritime trade. THe PEM was initially founded to celebrate/cerebrate  
that trade. It is also a VERY COOL museum. (I seem to also recall  
some inter-marriage portraits. I'll check it out next time I am at  
the PEM.)
