Jackie,
Metallic pigments and paints have been used in the past due to their
stability relative to other paint sources. The problem with bronze
paints, which have often been used as a faux gold (and still are) is
that the copper pigments will eventually darken and corrode given
exposure to oxygen, elevated relative humidity, or the presence of
organic acids, and pollutants. The problem with bronze paint being
applied to an iron object is that the iron, being less "noble" in the
galvanic series, will often corrode at a greatly acclerated rate when
the paint film suffers losses or cracks that expose the iron
substrate.
These days there is another class of pigments, derived from mica, that
can be used to precisely simulate metallic surfaces and patinas, and
yet are non-reactive and inert. As a conservator I use these mica
pigments in various self-made mixtures with conservation grade resins
or varnishes for a variety of precise effects on different substrates.
I do believe, however, that mica pigment based spray paints are
available through the home model hobbiest industry. If you are
interested in these let me know and I will try to find the vendor
information for you.
Cheers!
