Check out the Cincinnati Art Museum. They used to have such a book sale every two years.

Subject: selling library books

I have a question for those of you in museums that have research libraries. I'm looking for some information about the sale of used books in museums. These could be either books donated to the museum expressly for the purpose of being sold to raise money for the museum, or books that have been withdrawn/deaccessioned from the museum's research library. Here are some of my questions:

1. Do any museums sell such books - whether donated for that purpose, or withdrawn/deaccessioned?

2. If so, where or how are they sold? Are they available in the museum store? Or are they only available at special used book sales?

3. Is the sale of used books run by a Friends group or similar organization? Or by staff?

4. Are the proceeds restricted? If so, in what way(s)?

5. If the museum sells used books, do you have a policy or written procedure for the process that you'd be willing to share?

Thank you to anyone who can help us out!
