Hi,
I have a quote here from Rose, Hawks and Genoways text, "Storage of Natural
History Collections" section on conserving digital media:
"Cleaning a CD is a high-risk process because of the many ways in which
cleaning can damage a disc. Dirt or dust cannot be rubbed off a disc
without the risk of embedding it into the surface, and pressure of any kind
can be damaging. Some "cleaners" can prove to be solvents for the
substrate. Schetina (1989) recommends using a canister of compressed air to
blow away dust. Only if such blowing is insufficient to clean the disc
should one apply a light radial brushing from the center of the disc. Use a
cloth dampened with distilled water or alcohol; a dry cloth can cause
scratches. Circular brushing should never be used; this motion may elongate
a short, correctable error, turning it into a long, uncorrectabel error.
Keeping the environment and the case clean will minimize the need to clean
the CD."
Hope this is a help to your friend.
