When I worked at an institution similar to yours we changed out 2
temporary exhibition galleries every 10-12 weeks on an alternating
basis, so that one was on view when the other was changing. (but we also
had a permanent display that would change slightly perhaps every 6-10
months) I also worked in a larger place, with no permanent exhibition,
that changed everything completely every 4-8 weeks because the nature of
our visitation was that the same people would come in once a week for
7-15 weeks, and they would get mad if they came in several times and
there wasn't something new for them to see. Your visitation levels,
types and patterns will dictate what is most appropriate for you. If
you have seasonal visitation patterns then you can change seasonally in
anticipation; if you have a lot of very regular visitors, they would
appreciate seeing new things more frequently.

Subject: Re: Changing temporary exhibits

Every now and then (4 times in my six years here), we have a debate
about
how many times a year we should change exhibits, how long a given
exhibition
should last, and the timing of the switch since we close 8-14 days when
that
happens. We are small, 4 staff, about $400,000 a year budget, and we do
not
collect. We currently switch out quarterly at the beginnings of Jan.,
April, July, October.

Can anyone share with me, if they have a similar operation, what kinds
of
questions we should be asking in this debate? We don't want to keep
doing
what we're doing just because we've always done it that way, but we are
also
fairly satisfied with our current pace.

Thanks,
Rusty Baker
