I wrote a book about our local cemetery, _Canton's
West Lawn Cemetery_ (where President McKinley was
originally interred), and I give regular walking tours
as well.

I am currently working on Cemetery Walk Kits for
teachers that they can use as part of their field trip
to our museum (the cemetery is conveniently located
next door!). We are aligning it with the state
standards for 3rd grade, which focuses on local
history. One of the components is map reading too,
which dovetails beautifully with a cemtery walk.

We also have a self-guided walking tour brochure that
was developed by my predecessor.

I would be happy to help your intern any way I can.

There are a few resources I can recommend for anyone
else out there who might be working on a similar
project.

One is the Association for Gravestone Studies. They
have informational booklets on a variety of topics
that are available for non-members (at a slightly
higher fee). If you are at all interested in
cemeteries, you should DEFINITELY join AGS. They have
a research lending library for members, a newsletter,
and a scholarly journal. Very neat stuff.

Also, a new book called _Stories in Stone_ by Doug
Keister decodes many of the symbols often found on
gravestones. It is a small book, designed to be used
"in the field." (An aside, he also wrote _Going Out
in Style_ which is a photo book of fabulous mausoleums
around the country and the world -- we are hosting an
exhibition of his in a few years too).

There is a collection of essays that I found very
informative called _Cemeteries & Gravemarkers: Voices
of American Cutlure_ ed. by Richard E. Meyer. The
last essay is very interesting: "Strange but Genteel
Pleasure Grounds: Tourist and Leisure Uses of
Nineteenth-Century Rural Cemeteries."

Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland has an excellent
Educator's Handbook that is available at no charge to
teachers. I was able to get a free copy as well, as a
museum curator. It is well worth getting.

If I can be of further help, please contact me!
