It sounds reminiscent of the Norwegian Stave Churches, which some  
have said are reminiscent of Viking ships in construction and look  
like inverted ships when you're inside.  I have to admit the first  
time I learned about Norwegian Stave Churches was at Walt Disney World!

There is a lot of further information if you search at Google.
