Robert,

You may also want to look at cultural and heritage tourism (there is a great
difference in the two), i.e., cultural tourist visit art type (art museums, galleries,
musical, etc.), and heritage tourist visit historical museums, historic sites, living history
parks, etc.

As a prior ED of a museum, I marketed the historic tourist, since they
were the ones who usually took longer trips, were willing to take the turn off the interstate to visit our small museum. The cultural tourist, usually travels shorter periods, arrived by air, *- and these are the folks an art type museum, gallery or organization would want to center
(TARGET!) for visitation.

You may want to do a search on Googles for heritage and/or cultural tourism
or contact the American Tourism Association. Plus, there are excellent
international organization that do exact studies on visitation for BOTH
art and historical museums.

My Masters' thesis discussed how small museums attract tourism, and it does
take "community partnerships", networking and quality public relations/marketing.
