One-Day Workshops for the California Museum Community
Supported in part by Wells Fargo, the Wells Fargo Foundation, and the
Host Museums

BUILDING A DIVERSE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MUSEUM
This workshop will share best practices for building a diverse audience
using the experience of museum professionals and other experts in the
field of audience development who are also people of color. The basic
resources and principles needed to launch an audience development
campaign and a basic template for assessing resources in your community
and museum will be addressed. Participants will also develop and share
plans that could be employed in their organizations when organization
buy-in from every level of the museum is achieved. A “bonus session”
after the workshop will present basic vocabulary and knowledge regarding
ethnic diversity in order to better communications with a diverse
public.

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT STRATEGIC PLANNING AND MORE
The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the
strategic planning process and its implications for decision-making. A
case study will be distributed in advance that will provide background
information about a hypothetical museum, its community, and critical
issues impacting the museum. During the workshop, participants will be
identified as Board or Staff and will experience the process of
designing the framework for a strategic plan using the case study
museum. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed a
vision, mission, core values, and goals for the case study museum as
well as understand how to write objectives and action plans.

IDENTIFYING RISKS AND PROTECTING YOUR COLLECTION FROM NATURAL DISASTERS
Earthquakes and their secondary effects incorporate a multitude of risk
challenges in California. In order to preserve the cultural resources
entrusted to museums, this workshop will give staff members and
volunteers the tools and knowledge to identify the threats that place
our collections at risk and develop ways to safeguard them for the
future. There will be handouts on a variety of related topics such as
disaster preparedness planning, conservation resources, and storage
equipment companies as well as actual samples of materials available to
safeguard collections. Participants will also be given an opportunity to
ask questions pertaining to their own particular concerns and needs.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE TRAINING
This workshop will explore current educational and visitor studies
theory shaping museum experiences and how these theories can be
effectively applied to the floor. The goal is to provide a consistent
understanding of what museums do and reconcile that with visitors’
expectations and actual experiences. Through interactive exercises and
real gallery visits, participants will use Falk & Dierking’s Interactive
Experience Model to practice identifying parts of the visitor
experience; design an exhibit and a program using the theories of Howard
Gardner and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; and consider the move toward
lifelong education in Falk & Dierking’s new work Lessons Without Limits
and Guy Claxton’s Wiseup.

The registration fee includes workshop participation, additional
materials/resources, and a boxed lunch. A 10% group discount is offered
for museums sending 4 or more participants to any of the above
workshops. To qualify for the group discount, please send all
registrations in at the same time. Workshop reservations are honored on
a first-come, first-served basis. A confirmation, agenda, and directions
will be mailed if registration is received at least two weeks in
advance.

BONUS CAM WORKSHOP AT THE WMA CONFERENCE - SAVE THE DATE!
Fundraising Strategies: A Grab-bag of Ideas and Tools
This workshop will provide “one-stop shopping” for a variety of
fundraising strategies, including membership, sponsorships, major gifts,
planned giving, and special events. Especially pertinent to small and
mid-sized museums with limited development staff members who need to
cover all the bases, the goal of this workshop is to provide the
resources and tools needed to make museum fundraising efforts more
effective. The presenters, representing institutions that vary in size
and discipline, will discuss development efforts that have been
effective for their institutions. Participants will have an opportunity
to request, in advance, specific subjects for presenters to address.
