Susannah,

While I am not 100% sure (and maybe someone else can
correct me on this) but I believe that there is a time
limit on situations such as this one. 

In other words, if neither the donor/lender or museum
has documented proof of the donation/loan but the
organization has had the item for a number of years it
is officially the museum's property because the
organization has been caring for it for such a long
period of time. This would make it impossible for a
descendant to claim ownership of the said item.
