Mr. Martinson, here at the Museum of Florida History, we find that
information to teachers has to include reference to the fact that our
programs address Florida's Sunshine State Standards for various grades and
that the programs and activities also help students in preparation for the
FCAT, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. I am sure that many other
states have the same needs. Teachers are more responsive to educational
programs that are created to help them teach. Here in Florida, we have to
be creative because Social Studies [history, geography, etc.] are not
tested. Packets with pre- and post-visit activities have to include
incorporation of other disciplines that are, math exercises or reading or
critical thinking. We learned this through talking with teachers, social
studies supervisors, and school district officials. Karin Stanford, Curator
of Education and Historic Sites

Subject: Scheduling outreach/interpretive programs at public schools

Does anyone have a good (draft) letter to send out to schools/districts
for soliciting living history, outreach or interpretive talks with their
4th and 5th grade students? What would you recommend we include in the
packet, besides defining the subject matter? Thanks in advance.
