Strawbery Banke Museum is now taking applications for its Summer Museum Studies Internship.

Strawbery Banke is an outdoor history museum located in the heart of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a vibrant coastal New England city. On the 10-acre museum site, visitors explore 350 years of history in an urban neighborhood. On self-guided visits, enhanced by our interpretation staff, visitors are invited to compare colonial life in a 1695 merchant's home to the luxury of an 1870 governor's mansion. They can ponder responses to war in both the 1777 Pitt tavern and the 1943 corner grocery store. They contrast the stories of immigration and Americanization in the 1919 Shapiro house, home to a Jewish family from the Ukraine, with the 1830s Rider children, sent from England in hopes of better opportunity in the young United States.

Exhibits on craftsmanship, archaeology, architecture, and preservation invite an exploration of the skills and techniques of times past. Programs feature exciting learning experiences for all audiences, youth to adult to collector-connoisseur. The museum runs an active archaeological program, carries on continuous preservation efforts, and hosts the Center for the Study of Community, an academic center focused on oral history collection and community interaction.

Our summer Museum Studies Internships are tailored to the skills and interests of individual applicants. Recent internships have been arranged in Education, Archaeology, Preservation, Horticulture, Anthropology, Collections, Events, the Center for the Study of Community, and Library/Archives. Internships include practical, hands-on experience on meaningful projects, closely supervised and guided by museum staff. In addition, interns participate in a curriculum of local field trips, museum studies seminars, readings, and roundtable discussions. Stipends and housing on the museum grounds may be available for qualified applicants. Students in graduate or undergraduate programs, who have completed at least the first semester of the junior year, are eligible.

A written application is required. To request an application, please contact Michelle Moon at [log in to unmask] or (603) 422-7507. Please include your full mailing address. The deadline for completed applications is April 20, 2005. Placements will be made by May 1st.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. I look forward to hearing from you!
