From the photographs, the box reminds me of cigar humidors that were made in
China in the 1930s and 40s to sell to tourists. I recall seeing similar
boxes for sale in the China Drawn Works Store in Manila in the late 1940s,
when I was a young boy, and in fact I think I even bought one for a birthday
present for my father about 1949. I think that the Whitman sticker was stuck
on later. You might try checking with a tobacco museum to see if they have
anything similar. Good Luck!
