The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites, cultural centres and galleries and supporting arts or cultural groups.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
HA 488P (1.5 units)

Strategic human resource management is vital in the creation of positive and supportive working environments in which the dedicated, creative professionals who animate the cultural sector can thrive. This intensive course examines best practices in HR planning and management with an emphasis on the interconnected needs of the individual and the institution, and strengthens your capacity to interact with and supervise museum, heritage, and other cultural workers as you develop your understanding of:

        *       the changing cultural workforce 
        *       organizational structure and dynamics 
        *       approaches to leadership and decision-making 
        *       governance and HR policy development 
        *       competency development through recruitment, selection and management 
        *       performance planning, evaluation and supervision 
        *       continuing professional education and training 
        *       communications and conflict resolution 
        *       integrating and managing volunteers in the workforce 
        *       succession planning 
        *       legal considerations 
        *       ethical and professional expectations and accountability 

Dates: October 18 to 23, 2004

Fee: CDN $550 (credit and non-credit participation options available). Please note fees are subject to change.
Instructor: Thea Vakil is a result oriented and highly motivated former senior executive and educator with extensive experience in a number of large portfolios in the British Columbia government. Thea has special expertise in human resource management, organizational change, public policy and finance. She has taught widely in the areas of management, strategic human resource management and public policy in the School of Public Administration and in the Faculty of Business. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Public Sector Studies at the University of Victoria.

This course is open to all staff or volunteers working in cultural institutions looking to build confidence and develop skills in human resource management. Enrolment options allow you to choose to take courses either for academic credit or to enhance professional development.
