Hi all,

If you haven't seen it yet, Simon Tanner's recent Mellon-funded study
"Reproduction Charging Models & Rights Policy for Digital Images in American
Art Museums" is an interesting read. While focused on art museums many of
Tanner's recommendations could be applied at almost any museum. You can
view the study at: http://kcl.ac.uk/kdcs/USart/

The study includes a pricing formula based not only on actual cost of image
production, but on the "non-profit" value to the institution (such as
educational use, etc.)

Cheers,

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Charging for use of images

Hello all,

Our museum has been contacted by a film company who is producing a film
about the history of Las Vegas, along with a companion "coffee table"
book. They would like to photograph some of our atomic-related popular
culture artifacts for the book.

So, here's the question: do we charge for the use of the image? If so, what
are the going rates? We are a new museum and haven't yet set policies
concerning these issues. Reality once again outstrips policy, no?

Thanks for all comments.
