2004 UMUC Intellectual Property in Academia Workshop Series

The Center for Intellectual Property at the University of Maryland
University College is hosting an asynchronous online workshop series
that is of interest to faculty, university counsel, librarians,
instructional design and information professionals. Each workshop will
last approximately two weeks, providing the participants with an
in-depth understanding of core intellectual property issues facing
higher education. Please join us in this years discussions.
TACKLING THE TEACH ACT
November 2 - November 16, 2004
Moderated by *Kenneth D. Crews, JD, PhD, associate dean and director of
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Copyright
Management Center, and the 2003 Center for Intellectual Property's
Virtual Intellectual Property Scholar.
Due to the popularity of the first run of this workshop,
UMUC is offering this workshop again with Dr. Kenneth Crews.
The Copyright Act of 1976 was recently amended to accommodate
digital educational transmissions. The new amendment, Technology,
Education and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002 (TEACH Act),
allows for the use of certain digital media in the online classroom.
However, many colleges are struggling with how and whether to
implement the Act.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & BUILDING COMMUNITY ONLINE

Moderated by *Kimberly Kelley, PhD, associate provost of Information and
Library Services, and executive director of the Center for Intellectual
Property and Copyright in the Digital Environment, University of
Maryland University College, and *Steven W. Gilbert, EdM, MBA, president
of the TLT Group.
Studies show that establishing a community of shared academic
values fosters academic integrity in the classroom. But how do
institutions foster these values in the online environment?
Are special techniques and tools required?
These online workshops will include course readings, live chats and
