***********Developing a Disaster Plan (Web-based
Training)****************
Three-part Centra Session meeting 2 pm - 4 pm Thursdays, with three
weeks in between each session.
Dates: October 21 2004, November 11, 2004, December 2, 2004
To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, institutions need
knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
situations so that fewer disasters occur and damage is minimized.
Disaster planning requires the support and commitment of staff from many
departments, including facilities and fiscal affairs. Plan preparation
is more successful and effective when undertaken by a committee with
staff representatives from across the institution.
This web-based workshop is designed to support the work of an
institution's disaster planning committee. Homework assignments will
require input and support from a variety of staff members. Taught in 3
two-hour sessions over the course of six weeks, it guides participants
through the development of a written disaster plan. The modules cover:
establishment of a planning structure, information gathering, including
risk assessment and resource list development, setting recovery
priorities, an overview of recovery procedures, plan development, and
working with disaster recovery vendors.
Cost is $135, SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late registration),
$175 for non-members ($165 early bird, $200 late registration).
*********Preservation and Salvage of Audiovisual Materials (Web-based
Training)*************
Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 2:00 pm - 4:00

Do you worry about the life expectancy of your VCR tapes, CDs, and
motion pictures? Do you know what to do with your audiovisual materials
in the event of water damage from flooding or leaky pipes? This web
based training session is designed to inform staff in all types of
libraries, schools, and archives who manage audiovisual collections
about preventive preservation strategies and salvage options for these
special formats. In the event of a disaster, knowing the nature of AV
materials in the collection and which formats are salvageable will help
you set recovery priorities.
Topics covered in the session: life expectancies of common media,
preservation methods for extending the life of AV materials, disaster
preparedness strategies, and elements of response and recovery of these
fragile media. Basic salvage techniques are outlined for the following
types of formats: computer magnetic media, sound and video tapes, CDs
and CDROMs, LP's, motion pictures, and microfilm. The two-hour lecture
also incorporates a discussion of recovery vendors and resources helpful
to those working with AV collections.
Cost is $60 SOLINET members ($50 early bird, $90 late registration),
$100 non-members ($90 early bird, $130 late registration).
**************Introduction to Grants for Preservation
(Web-based)*************
Tuesday, December 14, 2004 Centra Session from 2pm - 4 pm.
Finding the funds for preservation projects in your institution can
often be a challenge. Fortunately there are outside sources of funding
available for preservation projects, if you know where to look and how
to apply for them. This two-hour CENTRA session is an introduction to
grant funding and the process of writing a grant proposal. Topics
covered include: types of grants, preparing to apply, elements of a
grant proposal, tips on grant administration, outcome measurement, and a
brief overview of the most common grants awarded to archives, libraries,
and other cultural institutions in the United States. Emphasis will be
placed on grant funding for preservation projects. Small institutions
are encouraged to participate. CENTRA, a web-based learning program,
allows for participants to interact with the instructor and their peers
in real time.
Cost is $60, SOLINET members ($55 early bird, $70 late registration),
$100 non-members ($90 early bird, $130 late registration).
