I have been waiting for that development for years. Unless someone has more
current knowledge, I do not think it has happened yet(in the US anyway).
Our MAs are still terminal degrees as far as museum work goes. I personally
expect PhD programs to develop in the US over the next decade, but we will
have to wait and see where. I will place my bets on Baylor or Texas Tech,
but then I am biased toward Texas. I figure that as soon as there are
programs available and experienced PhD-bearing museum professionals to
staff them, we will have the availability of what you seek here in the US.
The University of Leicester in the United Kingdom does offer a PhD, but it
is a research degree, rather than an academic one. Newcastle University,
also in the UK, offers a postgraduate diploma in museum studies, but not
quite a PhD. I believe there is such a program in London as well. Brown
University in Rhode Island offers a PhD in American Civilization, which
includes a terminal MA in museum studies. There are many programs in the US
that offer a certificate (or postgraduate work) in museum studies. Some can
be attached to either an MA or a PhD, but I suspect you would find those
redundant.
All that said, there are a number of PhD programs in non-profit
studies/management, as I am sure you noticed. The trick with most on-line
programs is that you get out of them only what your drive and motivation
will support. Face-to-face traditional programs are more intense,
interactive, and organized, and therefore bear more prestige. If you want
to continue working where you are and do the PhD, you may not have many
options. Capella and Walden universities are the only online PhD programs
involving non-profit management I found in my Google search.

Dear Listers,
I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Non-Profit Management or Museum
Administration. I graduated with my MA in Public History in 2001 and have
had internships and jobs in the museum field since then. Has anyone had
any experiences or know of any schools I could look into? I am currently
working as an Assistant Site Manager for Garfield Farm Museum in LaFox, IL
(40 miles west of Chicago). I noticed one school, Capella University
offered an online PhD program in Non-Profit Management, which would be
convenient, but I am leery of how good their program is. I would
appreciate any opinions from other professionals in the field.
