I think by publishing some kind of volunteer appreciation in your membership publication (whether of living volunteers or obits, etc.), you are also showing a wider audience that your organization recognizes and appreciates the efforts of its volunteers. This could even be seen as a policy that could eventually aid volunteer recruitment!

We put a childhood photograph (usually with some kind of aviation theme) of one of our volunteers (or occasionally part-time staff) in each of our Calendars of Events (and it's also on the website). It gets a great response. It's not necessarily the most professional part of the publication, but it shows our values as an institution.
