Not sure if I am on the correct line, but sort of think hat wearing etc
was a lot for practical reasons. While preparing food to keep hair
out of food, to keep warm in houses that don't have central heating,
to pass along information about where one comes from or to give
a more detailed message to a family member. With some Turkish head
scarves the different crocheted edging would have different meanings
and would be one way of passing along a message without saying it
directly. Covering ones' head while working outside under strong sun
to prevent sunstroke, to keep dust off hair when walking on dusty roads.
Perhaps than later this became a type of identity and certain areas would
adopt certain patterns and styles and than this would become another
reason to wear a head covering to show where one comes from.
So someone that works a lot inside and outside in a traditional society
without central heating, really it would seem, for practical purposes
wear a head covering most of the time.
