I used to work as the Special Events Manager for Naper Settlement, a
19th Century living history museum in Naperville, Illinois. Two years
ago we started an event called All Hallow's Eve. This year will be the
third year, and each year has been a learning year!

I don't work there anymore but I still live in the community and remain
very close with Naper Settlement and I will definitely be attending
the event this year! It will be a strange feeling to be a visitor
instead of the one running around like crazy making sure all the
coffins, are in place, etc.!

We based the event on 19th Century literature using the works of
authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, and used this theme to create
vignettes, have professional storytelling and other activities based
on the 19th Century literature theme. Our historic buildings were open
for touring and some of them had themed activities inside of them. We
also had, (and I assume they will again this year) a Headless Horseman
ride through the grounds. There were games, crafts and other activities
for younger children, and then we tried to plan "scarier things" for
later in the evening. There were also food vendors and a Gypsy Village
since gypsies were authentic to Naperville in the 19th Century.

This link to Naper Settlement will give you some of the info for this
year's event:

Depending on the weather, we got close to 1,000 visitors per night.

  Good luck!

we keep them from reinventing it themselves."

This question is posed to those working in historic house museums. Are
any of you having a Halloween event? If so, do you mind sharing info on
what your event consists of? What kind of turn out do you usually have
for this type of event? I would greatly appreciate input.
