We routinely use Gatorfoam for mounting photos and signs. It is
lightweight, yet more durable than foamcore, comes in 4' x 8' sheets,
and can be cut easily with a normal table saw, circular saw, or other
common carpentry tools (it can be cut with an Exacto knife as well, but
I don't recommend it for safety and accuracy reasons.) For a smooth
edge, use a fine-tooth blade on your saw and sand the edges with a light
sanding block.

3M makes a double-sided adhesive mounting tape in 2' x 3' sheets (467
MP Hi Performance Adhesive) that is perfect for no-heat dry-mount
applications using Gatorfoam or foamcore.

When mounting a photo, cut the Gatorfoam slightly larger than the
finished size and apply the 3M adhesive. Peel the adhesive backer and
carefully mount the image. Trim the excess foam board away, sand the
edges, and you're done.

Another option is to oversize your image, cut the Gatorfoam smaller,
and trim the excess image with an Exacto blade. Just flip the mounted
photo over and run a sharp blade down the edge of the foam for a clean
cut.

Hope that helps,

Joey

Listers,

I am currently working at a relatively small archive on campus for my
graduate
assistantship. This archive regularly puts together displays of
photographs
mounted on foam board for campus and other events. The cost associated
with
having (copies of) photographs mounted is high. After some research,
we feel
that purchasing foam board with pressure sensitive adhesive and
mounting the
photographs ourselves will be much more cost effective. But, we want
to
purchase cutting equipment to maintain the quality (appearance) of the
final
product.

Does anyone have any foam board cutting equipment recommendations?

Are there differences between mat board cutting equipment and foam
board
cutting equipment that we should know?

We would like to continue using black foam board. Are there any
recommendations for a supplier of black foam board with pressure
sensitive
adhesive that will minimize our cost?

Suggestions or information that seem useful but don't fit any of the
questions
above are very welcome!

Thank you in advance for your help. Please feel welcome to answer
off-list.
