*************Integrated Pest Management: Beating the Critter
Jitters*************

Friday, July 16, 2004 at University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL from 9am
- 4pm.

This full-day session explains and assesses available strategies for
preventing and combating pest problems. Participants will learn to
identify common pests, recognize the damage various pests cause to
library and archival materials, and develop strategies for implementing
an integrated pest management program of monitoring and control. The
instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of the Chicora Foundation.

Cost:  $115 SOLINET members, all categories ($105 early bird, $135 late
registration); $155 non-members ($145 early bird, $175 late
registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies for the member
rate.


***********Fundamentals of Book Repair*******************
 
Tuesday-Wednesday, July 27-28, 2004 at University of Central Florida,
Orlando, FL from 8:30 am - 5 pm.
 
This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform book
repair in libraries and those who supervise repair units. The workshop
teaches simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs for
materials in general, circulating and reference collections. The
procedures covered are tightening hinges, endsheet replacement, spine
replacement, paper mending, tip-ins and hinge-ins.
 
The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of materials that
are special, rare, or archival. Instructors are Tina Mason, SOLINET
Preservation Education Officer and Elizabeth Ferguson, SOLINET
Preservation Field Services Officer.
 
Cost is $175 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($165 early
bird, $195 late registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members, ($205 early
bird, $235 late registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies

***************Environmental Control and Monitoring***************** 
Preserving Collections in a Hostile Environment

Friday, July 30, 2004 at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY from
9am - 4 pm. 

The most cost-effective strategy to preserve our documentary resources
is by controlling temperature, relative humidity, and pollutants. This
workshop will help library staff identify the source of problems,
monitor the environment, and develop strategies for affecting change in
their institution. It will include an extensive packet of resource
materials, plus exhibits of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment.
Instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora Foundation.

*****************Managing and Preserving Digital
Materials*********************

Thursday, August 5, 2004, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN
from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

This basic workshop is designed to introduce participants to the
principles of preserving and providing access to materials in digital
formats. The workshop focuses on methods and issues in selecting,
accessioning, providing reference for, and preserving materials in
electronic form. The workshop is intended for archivists and those who
have a good understanding of archival principles and techniques, but
need basic training in how to apply the principles to records in
electronic form. Instructor is Thomas J. Ruller, Supervisor of Data
Processing, New York State Education Department.

Cost is $155, SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($145 early
bird, $175 late registration), $215 affiliate members, ($205 early bird,
$235 late registration). Any institution within Tennessee qualifies for

**************Introduction to Grants for Preservation
(Web-based)*************

Wednesday, August 18, 2004 Centra Session from 2pm - 4 pm. 

Finding the funds for preservation projects in your institution can
often be a challenge. Fortunately there are outside sources of funding
available for preservation projects, if you know where to look and how
to apply for them. This two-hour CENTRA session is an introduction to
grant funding and the process of writing a grant proposal. Topics
covered include: types of grants, preparing to apply, elements of a
grant proposal, tips on grant administration, outcome measurement, and a
brief overview of the most common grants awarded to archives, libraries,
and other cultural institutions in the United States. Emphasis will be
placed on grant funding for preservation projects. Small institutions
are encouraged to participate. CENTRA, a web-based learning program,
allows for participants to interact with the instructor and their peers
in real time.

Cost is $60, SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($55 early
bird, $70 late registration), $100 non-members, ($95 early bird, $120
late registration). 


*************Digital Imaging of Library Materials*****************

Wednesday, August 25, 2004, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL from
8am-4pm.

This two-day hands-on workshop is designed for individuals with little
to no experience with digitization. Participants will gain practical
experience scanning and editing image files, and will receive an
introduction to the issues surrounding small to mid-sized library
imaging projects. 

Topics covered include: equipment requirements for library digitization
projects, equipment calibration, the difference between digital imaging
and optical character recognition, the "scan once" methodology, file
types and compression, basic scanner operation, basic image adjustment
and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, OCR, terminology used in
digitization projects, preservation of digital masters, file naming, and
storage media. The instructor for this workshop is Steve Smith,
Preservation Librarian, Wellesley College.

Cost is $175 SOLINET members ($165 early bird, $195 late registration),
$215 Non-members ($205 early bird, $235 late registration). Any
institution in Florida qualifies for the member rate.


*****************Disaster Preparedness*******************
 
Friday, August 27, 2004 at University of Southern Mississippi, Long
Beach, MS from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
 
To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivists must
be prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies.

This one-day workshop is designed for staff members responsible for, or
interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or cooperative
disaster preparedness and response procedures. In addition to in-depth
discussion on the disaster planning process, there will be
demonstrations of salvage techniques, including air-drying books,
packing out wet materials, separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing
books, and drying photographic materials.

$155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $175 late registration). Any
institution in Mississippi qualifies for the member rate.


*************Archives Preservation: Holdings Maintenance****************

Thursday, September 16, 2004 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 9:00 am
- 4:00 pm

During this workshop participants will: review the nature of materials
found in archives and the preservation problems they pose; review
factors that cause the deterioration of materials; environment,
chemical, and physical deterioration; outline the goals of a holdings
maintenance program and the procedures used in carrying out holdings
maintenance activities; learn to evaluate materials and supplies used
during holdings maintenance activities.
 
This workshop is designed for archives staff as a basic introduction to
preservation issues and the holdings maintenance activities performed
during arrangement and description.

Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $135 late registration),
$155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $175 late registration). Any
institution in Georgia qualifies for the member rate.


**************Basic Collections Care**************

Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Massanutten Regional Library,
Harrisonburg, VA from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
 
Public library and school media center circulating collections are
subjected to a lot of wear and tear.  Most libraries perform some minor
repair on their damaged materials.  Despite staff members' good
intentions, some materials and procedures used can shorten the useful
life of the book, make it hard to open, and cause more problems later.  

This one-day workshop will teach staff how to minimize damage to
collections by learning proper use, handling and storage of collections.
Also covered are simple, economical and preservation-quality repairs on
materials for public libraries.  The session emphasizes techniques that
are most often needed in public libraries, do not require expensive
equipment and supplies, and can be performed successfully by clerical or
student support staff after a short training period.  The workshop will
NOT cover techniques for the repair of research collections or materials
that are special, rare, or archival.

Cost is $125 SOLINET members ($115 early bird, $145 late registration),
$165 Non-members ($155 early bird, $185 late registration). Any
institution in Virginia qualifies for the member rate.


******************Hurricane Preparedness******************** 
Surviving the Big One

This workshop is scheduled for, Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Regent
University Library, Virginia Beach, VA from 9 am - 4 pm.

Learn about steps that can be taken before a storm hits that can
increase an institution's chances for minimizing damage. This one and a
half day workshop focuses on the nature of hurricanes, general issues in
developing a disaster plan, making your institution storm-proof,
activities before, during and after the storm, and sources of
assistance. Instructor for this session is Dr. Michael Trinkley,
Director of Chicora Foundation.
