Duties:
The incumbent assumes responsibility for the overall care of the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden's (HMSG) international collection. Develops short and long range plans for the collection management program, while serving as the principle technical advisor to the Director, Deputy Director and Director of Art and Programs/Chief Curator on museum collections management. Leads administrative, curatorial, collection management, and support staff in the planning, development, implementation, and review of collection management objectives, policies, standards, and priorities. Assures collection transactions are timely, legal, and ethical. Oversees procedures and systems for physical care, conservation, exhibition, documentation, and risk management. Facilitates the resolution of problems, leading subordinate staff, and staff of other departments in the development of plans, strategies, priorities, and resources. Maintains a safe work environment and practices safe work habits in the execution of duties for personal safety. Oversees registration functions for the museum's large and active exhibition and loan programs. Ensures that the photography, conservation, documentation, and art handling are well coordinated. Makes decisions on personnel matters affecting the department. Represents HMSG at professional associations and other museums nationally and internationally.
