The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites, cultural centres and galleries and supporting arts or cultural groups.

COLLECTIONS PLANNING
HA 488M (1.5 units)
In times of diminishing resources, new opportunities, and increasing accountability, museums everywhere are challenged to take more thoughtful and strategic approaches to collections development. This new course explores planning processes that enable museums to create an institutional vision of the collection that would best meet their needs, and methods for achieving this vision. Participants will learn to set collections goals that are consistent with institutional mission and community interests; integrate collections into the museum's strategic, interpretive, and financial planning; assess the strengths and weaknesses of current collections, conduct gap analysis, and set priorities for acquisitions and deaccessioning; collaborate with other institutions to identify and access complementary collections; and successfully implement collections plans.
Dates: September 20-25, 2004, with preparatory assignment
Please register by:
August 29
Fee: CDN $550 (credit and non-credit options available). Please note fees are subject to change.
Instructor: Elizabeth Merritt
Elizabeth Merritt draws on her extensive experience in museums large and small, most recently as Director of Collections and Research at Cincinnati Museum Center. Ms. Merritt is the Director, Museum Advancement & Excellence with the American Association of Museums. In this position she synthesizes information on standards and best practices gathered from the AAM Accreditation Commission, AAM surveys, and over three hundred museums each year engaged in Museum Assessment or Accreditation Program reviews.
