Good evening, colleagues - If you need a large quantity (for example, for
washing quilts), I rent a "uni-bed cylinder" from my local Culligan dealer
for a monthly fee and a recharge fee when they switch it. I use a carbon
pre-filter (available from hardware stores) to remove the chlorine first. I
use polyethylene hose from a scientific supplier (like VWR) so I don't
recontaminate the water once it's deionized. Since I can hook up the hoses
using nylon fittings (available from hardware stores) to the sink, I can
regulate the temperature needed very easily as well as the flow rate.

If you only need smaller quantities, my local grocery store (Safeway) sells
deionized water by the gallon for about $1.00/gallon. But it is on sale
often for much less. I heat up these smaller quantities in a glass measure
in the microwave oven.
