At Conner Prairie we have packed dirt that seem to hold up fairly well. (In our 1836 village of Prairietown it seems to hold up better than in some of our newer areas. We have also been making efforts to increase accessibility to any new structures that are constructed or moved to site.

I also know at Living History Farms in Iowa, they have used milled asphalt, and I think they have had some success with that. In their 1875 town of Walnut Hill they also have wooden boardwalks which are appropriate to that time and place. It might be worth a call to them.

Good luck,

I've been asked to do a little research on what other outdoor museums have
used to make their roads and walkways more friendly for visitors who have
difficulty walking or use wheelchairs or scooters. What materials have
been used, how have they held up, and do they still have a period feel
consistant with their surroundings?

Thanks,
