Dear Museum-L,

We are pleased to announce that the AAM Board granted a provisional
approval of the application to create a Standing Professional Committee
for Diversity in Museums. The application was developed by the leadership
of the Diversity Coalition, an administrative committee of the AAM Board
made up of representatives from AAM Professional Interest Committees,
Affiliates and Standing Professional COmmittees. By seeking this new
status as an SPC, the committee is able to build on the success of the
Diversity Coalition and to more successfully collaborate with other
Standing Professional Committees and allied organizations to fully
integrate diversity into all facets of museums.

The SPC for Diversity in Museums represents, recognizes, and embraces the
increasingly diverse constituencies that member museums serve or seek to
serve, and ensures greater representation and leadership from such
constituencies throughout the museum profession for maximum organizational
effectiveness. The Diversity Committee advances this mission through
representation within the programs and governance of the American
Association of Museums (AAM), by providing educational programming,
products and publications, leadership initiatives and fellowships.

In order to promote the inclusive meaning of diversity, the committee
adopted the following definition: ¡§diversity¡¨ means maximum inclusion,
respecting and appreciating the differences in ethnicity, gender, national
or regional origin, disability, age, religion, economic status and/or
sexual orientation.

Our Vision: The Standing Professional Committee for Diversity in Museums
ensures the value of museums to all people by advancing inclusiveness and
equity in museums and their communities.

The committee seeks to engage a membership made up of all facets of museum
work. The Committee is also seeking Nominations for the Provisional Board
Members. The first duties of the Board will be to review and revise the
proposed operating guidelines and to develop a plan for the future work of
the committee to be presented to the AAM Board for approval. Nominations
are due June 18, 2004.
