Contract Position, Assistant Director, Heritage Health Index

Heritage Preservation, a national nonprofit organization in
Washington, DC, is seeking a professional with library, museum,
and/or archives experience to assist in conducting a national survey.
The Heritage Health Index will, for the first time, assess the
condition and preservation needs of collections held by the full
range of collecting institutions, including archives, historical
societies, libraries, museums, and scientific research organizations.
The survey will be distributed to 15,000 institutions in every U.S.
state and territory in summer 2004.  This opportunity to be a part of
an exciting, new project would be ideal for a professional
re-entering the workforce or an advanced graduate student with prior
professional experience.

The position reports of the Director of the Heritage Health Index and
will include working in team environment to:
•	respond to questions from recipients of the survey questionnaire
•	make follow-up telephone calls and e-mails to survey recipients
•	encourage response through various publicity initiatives
•	gather and organize case studies from collecting institutions
•	review collected data
•	write and produce project reports
•	publicize survey results

Required skills: 
•	experience working with a library, archive, historical society, or
museum
•	familiarity with a wide range of collecting institutions, including
libraries, archives, historical societies, and museums
•	some knowledge of and interest in conservation and preservation
•	professional phone manner and comfort initiating telephone contact 
•	strong writing skills and experience writing reports for
professional audiences
•	excellent organizational skills
•	ability to manage multiple tasks
•	proficiency with Windows based programs and familiarity with
database applications
•	positive and energetic work ethic

Prior experience with surveys, statistics, public relations,
FileMaker Pro, public speaking, and Spanish are desirable.

This grant-funded contract position will be from August 2004 through
February 2005. Position will be 4 days per week (generally from 9
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. but flexible) at a rate of $200/day.
