There is a wonderful article called "Using Cut flowers and Potted Plants in
Museums Fact Sheet" by May Cassar.

It was on the website www.museums.gov.uk/pdf/environment/plantsflowers.pdf

At my museum we only have plants in the glassed in lobby. At Christmas time
we have poinsettas also only in the lobby. Some of the reasons for banning
plants would be the danger of pest infestations, pollen staining, and
environmental effects with humidity.

This is a great article that ends with a chart of plants with a listing of
how well they resist pest and tolerance to low light. I strongly suggest
that anyone interested check it out.
