The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies is extending the

Victorian High Style and Vernacular Landscape Design for the Upper
Midwest.
Instructor: Dean Sheaffer, principle of Sheaffer Landscape Architects,
Dixon, Illinois. Sheaffer specializes in historic preservation and design and
is a frequent speaker and workshop instructor throughout the Midwest
region.
When: Saturday, May 1, 2004. 9;30 a.m — 4:30 p.m.
Fee: $50, includes lunch and morning coffee

What: This workshop will help participants to see the landscape through
the eyes of “Victorians” as participants plan for the rehabilitation or
creation and maintenance of appropriate gardens that compliment old
homes and historic properties. Course topics will include:
The 19th century ideal of “beauty;” Historic landscape methods; Context:
how vernacular lawns, fences, plants, and furnishings evolved;
Inventory: identifying landscape remnants and patterns; Analysis &
recommendations: the “significance” of landscape elements and features;
Spatial organization: preserving and restoring the historic landscape
feeling; Plant types and sources: historic plants and varieties for
landscape and garden; Design and maintenance hints and guidelines:
some “dos and don'ts.”
This workshop qualifies for Continuing Education Hours for U of Illinois
Extension Master Gardeners.
Active Master Gardeners/Interns, and members of the Illinois State
Museum receive a 10% discount.

The Campbell Center is a mid-career training facility for professionals in
the Historic Preservation, Collections Care, and Conservation fields.
Located in Northwestern Illinois, on the campus of the former Shimer
College, the Center is about 3 hours west of Chicago. Shuttle service is
available from Rockford, Illinois.
