I have had a problem with carpenter ants at my home. What finally
worked was to go outside with a flashlight after dark, once the
colonies were in full swing in the warm weather. I could see the
trails of ants, with hundreds of individuals, winding up and over
the walls. Then a spot of 'Maxforce' ant bait gel was placed right
in their path. Periodically doing this through the summer really
worked. I had placed bait stations with various protein or sweet
mixtures around, but this did little. Apparently they do not stray
much from their path, and so staying up and going out after dark and
locating their routes was the key. This method used only small
amounts of pesticide in targeted locations.
