We have a staircase made of walnut (1885) that has a carved, stylized wing
at the bottom of the stringer . We know the name of the person who built
the staircase and I have done some research to try to establish if this was
a symbol that he used to mark his work and I've found nothing. I'm
wondering if anybody is familiar with symbols like this used in interior
carpentry. If the wing is not a personal symbol of the carpenter, could it
have been something that the homeowner requested or possibly a common
symbol used on stairs? Any help or ideas where to further research
carpentry symbols would be appreciated.
