I agree that it should be locked.  We have lots of doors off of our public
areas that hold things that are off limits to the public and all have
locks.  Also, the keys are available to appropriate staff depending on
their level of security access.

Also, I am reminded of an exhibit once where the museum put up a picture of
a Victorian figure holding his hand over his mouth and some polite words to
the effect of please do not touch.  It was quite amusing but also
effective.  Perhaps a fun picture of a person "shushing" with the
words "Our collections are old and need their beauty sleep" or something
like that would work and be fun.
