The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia is pleased to offer the following distance education opportunity designed to meet the needs of a range of individuals who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in community-centred practice.
BUILDING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
HA 488S (1.5 units); distance offering
Strong, sustained, and mutually beneficial relationships with communities are critical to museums and other cultural and heritage organizations seeking to play timely, relevant, positive, and socially responsible roles in society. This new distance education course builds your knowledge and skills associated with effective community cultural and social development activities, and strengthens your capacity to:
*assess personal, professional, and organizational readiness to initiate community partnerships
*identify community characteristics and needs
*define potential community roles and relationships
*acquire personal and organizational community cultural development competencies
*build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships with diverse groups through a range of appropriate and collaborative initiatives
*interact with communities in respectful and culturally appropriate ways
*include and balance diverse perspectives associated with effective community cultural and social development activities
*deal with controversy and resolve conflict
*measure the effectiveness of community partnerships
Dates: May 3 to July 30, 2004

Instructor: Elizabeth Kidd has worked as Arts Programmer at the Roundhouse Community Centre in downtown Vancouver since 1995 and has generated and/or facilitated a number of collaborative community arts projects and worked with community artists in residence in the fields of contemporary dance, visual arts and textiles.

Through this new distance education course you enhance your knowledge and skills associated with effective community cultural development through considering the following:

*Unit 3: Know Your Organization: Developing the Organization to Collaborate with Community
*Unit 4: Know Your Communities
*Unit 5: Building and Sustaining Relationships
*Unit 6: Measuring Success; Planning for the Future

This course is open to all staff or volunteers working in cultural institutions looking to build confidence and develop skills in community development, including:
*professionals working within museums, galleries, heritage or other cultural organizations
*professionals from libraries, archives, zoos, aquariums and other relevant educational institutions
*committed volunteers working closely with and in support of cultural or educational organizations
*cultural workers who operate in partnership with the public in cultural centres, community centres, or educational or heritage institutions
*cultural policy makers, funders, and liaisons
*members of ethnic and cultural minority groups working with or considering building relationships with any of the above type of organizations
*members of organizations that have as part of their mission to work with and on behalf of a communities; including charitable organizations, NGOs, service organizations, or church groups
*professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites, cultural centres, science centres, galleries and community centres.
