Okay, fine then. There's the 10 minute rule between firing artillery which is
also arbitrary. It doesn't matter how long inbetween firings you wait but how
well you worm and swab the piece out afterwards. I've seen guys misfire and
instead of cleaning the gun out then and there, they pricked the cartridge
again and tried to fire. *shudder*

And as I mentioned before, it's not just the regs but the whole attitude that
assumes they know everything and that reenactors are stupid. I know a lot of it
came from the US bicentennial and the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg where
there weren't any regs and a lot people ran amuck. But that was basically when
reenacting was in its infancy. Safety standards as well as authenticity
standards have come a long way since then. So instead of revisiting the issues
and working with units to make sure events are safe, the NPS takes the stand
that reenactors aren't safe and makes a lot of arbitrary rules to compensate.
This does not necessarily make things safer, just a lot more inconvenient.

On a different note - someone mentioned about units overloading the cannons to
get a bigger "boom". That's an excellent point. I think those of us who are
arround cannons tend to forget that to the average joe, they're incredibly loud
with just half a load, let alone a full load. But I will admit, it is really
cool to see the flame come out of the barrel a split second before you hear the
sound. :)
