Having worked in a high end art and framing gallery
for 6 years I have seen art that has been destroyed
due to poor framing.
You should always use acid-free mats.  Bainbridge
makes a good line of rag mats called Art Care.  This
line of mats neutralizes acid by-products, is fade and
bleed resistant, buffered to maintain alkaline pH, and
is acid and lignin free.
