Executive Director

The Oneida Community Mansion House, a private, non-profit museum, invites candidates for an executive director to lead the organization as it seeks to expand its audience, its public visibility, and the identification of new sources of revenue. We seek an individual with the vision to pull the varied parts of the institution together, and the enthusiasm to engage the community about history in creative ways that relate to their lives in the present.

Qualifications: MA in museums studies, public history, or museum management with a demonstrated ability to provide leadership in planning, fundraising, program development, and community outreach. The diversity of the institutions’ holdings and mission makes the ability to work with people, and a creative approach to museum administration essential. The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of American history and experience in staff and budget management, marketing, strong oral and written skills, and a strong public service orientation.

Housed in the original home of the Oneida Community, a nineteenth century utopian community in central New York, The 93,000 square foot Mansion House includes a non-profit museum, and a for-profit corporation. The for-profit corporation provides earned income that helps to support the mission of the museum, and preservation of the building. Other earned income endeavors include rental of apartments, guest rooms in which visitors may experience spending the night in the historic building, a privately operated golf course nearby, and rental for weddings and special community events.

OCMH currently employs five full-time and seven part-time staff and draws upon the support of some seventy volunteers.

Please send resume, cover letter, names of three references and a writing sample to:
Gretchen Sullivan Sorin, Cooperstown Graduate Program, Box 800 Cooperstown, New York, 13326. No calls
