LOWER EAST SIDE TENEMENT MUSEUM
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum was founded in
1988 to “promote tolerance and historical perspective
through the presentation and interpretation of the
variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on
Manhattan’s Lower East Side.” The heart of the Museum
is an 1863 tenement house built by a German immigrant
that housed 7,000 people, mostly immigrants and the
children of immigrants, between 1863 and 1935. The
Museum is in the process of researching the families
and restoring the apartments to different periods in
time. In addition to tours of the historic apartments
the Museum produces changing exhibits, slide shows,
videos and films, walking tours, theatrical
performances, lectures, and symposia.
