POSITION VACANCY

The Huntington Library, Art Galleries, and Botanical Gardens
San Marino, CA

Botanical Educator, Special Projects
Grant Sponsored, 75% Time (equivalent to 30 hrs/wk), Exempt

Working under the direction of the Botanical Education Specialist and
Director of Education and in close cooperation with the Director of
Botanical Gardens, plans and implements educational outreach component of
the National Science Foundation grant:  Developmental Modeling and
Informatics (The Computable Plant ).  Develops, evaluates, and introduces a
new set of techniques for science teachers at high school and pre-service
levels to improve understanding of botany and developmental biology, and to
provide a technological basis for science education through the use of
computer modeling.  Designs and conducts a culminating institute for high
school students.  Works as a member of Huntington and inter-institutional
teams to create programs that reflect the Huntington's collections and the
mission of the grant.  Represents the Huntington on professional committees
and presents Huntington programs at professional meetings and conferences.
This is a grant-funded, five-year position at 75% time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In conjunction with Botanical Division staff, creates, implements and
coordinates training of teacher and high school students in organismal
botany and developmental biology; recruits teachers and high school students
in coordination with Caltech and relevant local institutions; develops and
leads teacher and student institutes and workshops; acts as coordinator for
an educators' network, conducting follow-up workshops and classroom visits
during the school year; administers grants to participating teachers,
including advising on expenditures; coordinates and conducts program
evaluation; supervises project interns and coordinates with institute
instructors; purchases supplies and materials for workshops, institutes, and
projects; leads outreach dissemination including the public kiosk and web
site; manages the project budget.

QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree in botany, biology or related field required; graduate
degree, or progress toward graduate degree in botany or science education
highly desirable; understanding of bio-informatics and developmental
genetics highly desirable; demonstrated ability to create and implement
teacher training in biological sciences required; strong organizational
skills required; budget development and management experience highly
desirable; familiarity with the Wisconsin Fast Plant program highly
desirable; demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom situation highly
desirable; ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team essential;
superior writing and oral communication skills essential; must be physically
able to get around 200 acre site performing duties such as climbing sloped
or inclined areas; must have own transportation; must have valid CA drivers
license.
Experience: At least three years experience in developing, implementing, and
evaluating teacher training programs in biological sciences; experience in
classroom teaching and working with the public.
