Re improving public perception of Arabic cultures...I had been planning for
years an exhibition entitled "Religion, Spirituality and the Object" for
this fall in which I was going to show handcrafted liturgical objects that
had been created by many world religions (including Islam--I was going to
show calligraphy, garments and rugs to emphasize the importance of religious
belief and religious objects to daily life in the Islamic world, a concept
that is unfamiliar to us in this country). Well, the funding fell through
(big surprise) and I was forced to cut back severely on the scope of the
project. We decided to focus on Islamic calligraphy to present an idea of an
art form important to Islamic culture and religion, and are presenting a
two-hour program about the history and forms of Islamic calligraphy as well
as a one-day hands-on Islamic calligraphy workshop with a local graphic
designer who is Islamic and an expert on such things as part of his
profession.

If anyone is interested in the project as a whole (which encompasses eight
weeks, six exhibitions and eleven public programs, and religions ranging
from Catholicism to Sikhism) I will be glad to email you a synopsis. We
open it on November 14 and it runs through January 18.
