The Illinois Digitization Institute of the University of Illinois Library
will be offering a series of on-site and on-line training opportunities on
digital imaging. One-day workshops, "Basics and Beyond," are offered at
sites around Illinois. The following topics will be addressed: advantages
and disadvantages of digital imaging; how to plan successful and
sustainable projects; equipment choices; digitization techniques;
professional standards; and making use of the Illinois Digital Archives
(IDA). Registration is $45, and covers lunch, refreshments, and handouts.
These workshops are part of a series of on-site and on-line training
opportunities sponsored by the University of Illinois Library, the Illinois
State Library, and the Illinois Heritage Association. On-site workshops
scheduled to date are: Des Plaines Historical Society, July 22, 2003;
Champaign Public Library, August 4, 2003; East Moline Public Library,
August 19, 2003; Elgin Area Historical Society, September 16, 2003; Chicago
Historical Society, October 6, 2003; and Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville, Lovejoy Library, November 3, 2003. Additional workshops will
be scheduled for 2004. The workshops are partially funded by a National
Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For
more information and a registration form, contact Patricia L. Miller, IHA,

A second track of three-week on-line digitization workshops, "Basics and
Beyond, On-line," will begin in the fall. The first will be October
21-November 11. These workshops are for organizations that are already
involved in digitization projects and seek more in-depth training. For more
information about all of the "Basics and Beyond" training opportunities,
visit the IDI Web-site at:
