Edward Porter Alexander Historian

Edward Porter Alexander, 96, a historian, author and museum administrator,
died of a heart ailment July 31 at ManorCare Rehabilitation Center in Chevy
Chase. He moved to the Washington area in 1999.

Dr. Alexander was director of the New York State Historical Association
from 1934 to 1941, director of the Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1941
to 1946 and vice president for interpretation at Colonial Williamsburg from
1946 to 1972. He was the first director and founder of the museum studies
program at the University of Delaware from 1972 to 1978, when he retired.

He was author of "James Duane: Revolutionary Conservative," "Museums in
Motion: An Introduction to the History and Functions of Museums," "Museum
Masters: Their Museums and Their Influence" and "The Museum in America:
Innovators and Pioneers."
