I've never heard of a museum writer or editor charging by the word. The
ones I've dealt with all charge by the hour, between $40 and $50.
Although, if you do the math, the average paragraph is about 50 words, and
takes about an hour to write and polish, so yeah, about $1 a word.
Writing and editing go for the same rate. You do not define what you mean
by "from scratch," but of course the more work you ask the writer to do,
the longer it will take and the more it will cost.
