Shelly,
The Met and Guggenheim are AMBITIOUS for one day. If you're interested in
some smaller institutions, I highly recommend the Lower East Side Tenement
Museum. It's a wonderful historic site and the space is available by tour
only--www.tenement.org.
The New Museum is a small contemporary art space in downtown
manhattan--www.newmuseum.org
Some links for walking tours:

I live in Brooklyn, so for other recommendations feel free to contact me
off-list.
Best,
Shana O'Hara
