Jill,
We were doing pretty much the same thing you are now about 2 years ago.  We
did purchase the ISBN number;although, we never really got around to getting
it sent out through another distributor.  I believe it cost us about $225
for 10 numbers.  10 was the minimum you could get, so now we have nine
numbers waiting for us for any future catalogs we might want to assign ISBN
numbers to.  Our director actually handled the process of acquiring the
numbers, but that is my understanding of how it worked.
