Join us in celebrating the reopening of the Newport Colony House, built in
1739 by Richard Munday. Although no longer used as a state house, the Colony
House remains the property of the State of Rhode Island and is an essential
element of the state's architectural, political, and cultural legacy. Hear
from historians, preservationists, and legal experts about the history of
the building and its political and cultural
legacy. Join fellow community members in discussions, reenactments, and
tours. Learn about the experiences of Rhode Islanders as they have worked
both individually and collectively towards religious, personal, and
political liberty from the colonial period through the present day.
>FRIDAY, 4 APRIL, 7:30 PM -- John Clarke: the Contradictions of Religious
Liberty. / A lecture by Dr. T. Dwight Bozeman of the University of Iowa.
>SATURDAY, 5 APRIL, 11:00 AM -- The Newport Colony House: An Architectural
History and Tour. / A lecture and tour led by Robert O. Jones, Senior
Architectural Historian at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and
Heritage Commission.
>WEDNESDAY, 9 APRIL, 7:30 PM -- Mobs in Colonial America: Politics in the
Streets around the Colony House. / A lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning
historian Dr. Gordon Wood of Brown University.
>TUESDAY, 15 APRIL, 10:00 AM -- Revolutionary Newport: A Walking Tour. / A
tour of the Historic Hill led by NHS staff including a stop inside the
Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, a site of Newport's Stamp Act riots. Weather
permitting; reservations required.
>MONDAY, 21 APRIL, 7:30 PM -- Government in Rhode Island: An Historical
Perspective on Rhode Island's Current Form of Government. / A roundtable
discussion on how Rhode Island's current governmental structure developed.
Participants will include Chief Justice Frank J. Williams of the Rhode
Island Supreme Court, Dr. Elmer Cornwell
of Brown University, and Dr. Maureen Moakley of the University of Rhode
Island.
THURSDAY, 24 APRIL, 7:30 PM -- The Trial of Charles Harris and His Pirate
Crew: A Reenactment. / A dramatic reading of excerpts from the trial of
Charles Harris and his crew, accused of piracy in 1723. Come hear what the
crew said in their defense and decide if you would agree with the trial's
eventual verdict. Always wanted to play a pirate? To sign up to play a part

MONDAY, 28 APRIL, 7:30 PM -- Voices from the Home Front: The American
Revolution in Newport. / A dramatic reading of diaries and letters written
by Newporters during the American Revolution. Featured actors will include
Janine Weisman, Newport Daily News journalist and successful local actress,
and Ken Yellis, Executive Director
at the Tennis Hall of Fame.
All programs will take place at the Newport Colony House at Washington
Square in downtown Newport, RI. The building's first floor is wheelchair
accessible through the door underneath the front stairs. Admission to the
Rhode Island Government roundtable is free; all other programs cost $7 for
NHS members and $15 for nonmembers; the entire series costs $35 for members
and $75 for nonmembers. Seating for all programs is limited; for
