My earlier comment was not intended to be "bashing" of any kind, but
simply a statement of fact. Page 31 of the National Security Strategy
states:
"We will take the actions necessary to ensure that our efforts to
meet our global security commitments and protect Americans are not impaired
by the potential for invetigations, inquiry, or prosecution by the
International Criminal Court (ICC), whose jurisdiction does not extend to
Americans and which we do not accept."

(The full text of the National Security Strategy can be accessed at
<www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/nss5.html>. This passage is in section IX on that
site)

In light of the article from Scotland (which I have not read), or simply
regarding the very real possibilities referred to in this thread, this
stance may be of some concern to those of us interested in the long term
preservation of cultural objects in the cultures from which they originated.

The discussion on Scotch is equally as interesting, and much more fun!

What's my point?

I'm hearing America bashing, UK bashing in the
discussions that followed this thread. The thread was
the result of ONE article based in Scotland.

My point was to show that the world has opinions on
this matter, that looting historically has transpired,
there is a large volume of incredibly valuable
artifacts to be protected, the incidences didn't start
with the Scotch publication (which is making me want
to drink some right now--Crown Royal please), that
looting of a nonartifactual basis is now ongoing in
Iraq by the indigenous peoples, so don't just presume
it's us, that the war causes huge pissing contents
among normally civil people, and that one should get a
well-rounded perspective on this subject and not fly
off the seat of one's pants trying to attack or defend
one's flag.

Goodness gracious. I think I'm exasperated by the
question.
